ECT+A: Pioneering Structural Innovation and Holistic Design

An Insight into the Visionary Mind of Ar. Edward Co Tan

Architecture has always been a passion for Ar. Edward Co Tan, Principal Architect and founder of ECT+A, an abbreviation for Edward Co Tan + Architects. From his early days as a student, he was captivated by the practice of architecture, laying the foundation for his journey towards becoming a renowned architect in the Philippines and leading his own firm. ECT+A was born out of the increasing number of projects that demanded the attention of Ar. Edward and his team. With each new project, the firm expanded its horizons, establishing ECT+A as a prominent player in the architecture industry.

The firm has been specializing in high-density residential and hospitality spaces for more than 20 years now. It sets itself apart by delving into the intricate nuances of human behavior and architectural language. Their designs are characterized by rational planning and meticulous attention to detail, ensuring that spaces are not only architecturally sound but also influential in enhancing user experience.

Through close collaboration with clients, the firm strives to customize designs that meet each user’s unique needs. This results in spaces that not only inspire but also cater to the practical aspects of daily life.

Structure as Architecture

At the heart of ECT+A lies a distinct design philosophy - structure as architecture. This philosophy revolves around the concept of multifunctional structural elements. It encompasses a holistic approach to architectural design, with a particular emphasis on their most used application– the interactive wall system. In this system, walls not only define spaces but also carry the weight of the structure.

This approach necessitates simultaneous consideration of mechanical, electrical, and plumbing aspects, seamlessly integrating them with the architectural vision. By elevating the most essential elements as the focal point of their designs, ECT+A achieves a harmonious synthesis of form and function.

Solid Milestones

The achievements of ECT+A have not gone unnoticed, as evidenced by the multiple awards bestowed upon them by BCI Asia, recognizing them as one of the top architectural firms in the Philippines. Ar. Edward humbly acknowledges these accolades, viewing them as a testament to the dedication and passion poured into each project, and serve as reminders to cherish the milestones achieved throughout their architectural journey.

Looking ahead, ECT+A aims to continually create safe and future-proof spaces that align with their vision of responsible architecture. Ar. Edward gives his firm assurance that the firm will “focus on architecture first and foremost, to speak of an architectural language that is compatible with nature but would still keep up with the changing time. The challenges of rising environmental issues are a vital aspect of safe and future-proof design and planning spaces; this includes a focus on passive design elements and technologies that are helpful to the building and the surrounding environment, among others.”

Ar. Edward Co Tan and ECT+A embody a forward-thinking approach to architecture grounded in a deep understanding of the built environment and a passion for innovative design. Allow us to let you in on their SOLID 10, ECT+A’s best practices that enable this firm to shape the future of architectural design, one groundbreaking project at a time.

My Enso Lofts whole building

1. We prioritize multifunctionality in our designs.

We recognize that structure goes beyond its utilitarian role. Instead of viewing structure and architecture as separate entities, ECT+A aims to explore the potential of structure in enhancing architectural expression and meaning.

2. Efficiency lies at the core of our practice.

Driven by the increasing demands for space in high-density areas, our firm focuses on three critical factors: space planning, construction cost, and operational cost. By optimizing these aspects, we create designs that are efficient in terms of both functionality and resources.

3. We specialize in the use of the Interactive Wall System.

This innovative approach offers significant advantages over the traditional post and lintel system. By transforming beams and columns into a single structural unit, we optimize material usage and minimize construction work without compromising durability. Our notable high-rise residential projects like Malate Bayview Mansion, Urban Deca Tondo, and Stanford Suites showcase the success of this three-dimensional planning system.

4. Our designs aspire to be architectural landmarks.

Guided by the philosophy of Structure as Architecture, we harness the potential of load-bearing walls to create flexible spaces. The integration of the red Y-column as both a structural element and a prominent design accent exemplifies this approach. Notably, our Dexterton building project in BGC demonstrates how architectural features can guide visitors while enhancing the building's aesthetic appeal.

5. Meticulous attention to detail characterizes our facade designs.

My Enso Lofs project, for instance, boasts a unique canopy design that combines glass and steel framing. Apart from its sculptural purpose, the canopy acts as translucent insulation and enhances the building's overall aesthetics. The building envelope, resembling a leaf from above, features wide atriums that promote better circulation.

6. We focus on the macro.

Incorporating mixed-use typologies, such as in My Enso Lofs, we strive to foster a strong connection between our buildings and the surrounding neighborhoods. By creating inviting physical attributes and open designs, we encourage foot traffic and facilitate easy access. Additionally, the building's natural tones contribute to reducing heat gain in the immediate vicinity.

7. We prioritize sustainable operation through value space planning.

Considering the current global challenges related to public health and the environment, we emphasize passive design and green architecture. Our approach focuses on utilizing spaces effectively, promoting breathability, and enabling customization. We practice green architecture to its core uses, doubling down on passive design and good architectural planning without implementing too much technology that would significantly affect the cost.

For example, in Hilltop Premier Residences, a premier residential project in Horseshoe Village, the utilization of space is possible due to the displacement of dead volumes created by protruding beams and columns, thus making spaces more breathable and visually spacious and more customizable for movable furniture. Future-proof building utilities and a holistic planning approach ensure long-term sustainability in collaboration with clients, consultants, and suppliers.

8. We use technology advantageously.

Leveraging technology is an integral aspect of our design process. We embrace advancements like the cutting-edge direct-pressure water distribution system and similar innovations to enhance energy conservation in projects that demand a more ecological and sustainable approach. Removing water tanks not only reduces structural loads but also enhances the building's visual appeal.

9. At ECT+A, innovation is paramount.

We constantly adapt to architectural trends to provide exceptional service to our clients. One example is the retail project Banawe Lifestyle Center, where we reinvented the use of vertical circulation elements as a focal point in the facade. This iconic design reflects and embodies the spirit of the environment with its industrial and straightforward architecture.

10. Collaboration is the essence of our work environment.

We recognize that architecture is a collaborative effort involving multiple parties. Within our design firm, regular meetings involve all departments, fostering an educational and instructional community dedicated to responsible design. Our office library also serves as a valuable resource, promoting continuous learning through practical application.
